The Danger of Ignoring Toenail Fungus

Toenail fungus, or onychomycosis, can be an unsightly condition to have. It usually appears as a white or yellow spot under the tip of the toenail. This infection often comes from walking barefoot in a public bathroom, locker room, or swimming pool area. It is important to treat this condition immediately to prevent it from worsening, spreading, or causing more serious complications. The fungi that cause this infection are contagious and can spread to other parts of the body, even the blood. Most often, they spread to other nails on the feet or hands. Antifungal medicine is usually used to combat the problem. Ways to prevent toenail fungus include using antifungal powder on the feet each day, not sharing shoes or socks, washing and drying feet regularly, wearing breathable shoes, and not walking barefoot. If you suspect you have toenail fungus, contact a podiatrist as soon as possible for proper diagnosis and treatment.

Antifungals & Deterrence
Oral antifungal medicine has been shown to be effective in many cases. It is important to consult with a podiatrist to determine the proper regiment for you, or potentially explore other options.
Applying foot powder on the feet and shoes helps keep the feet free of moisture and sweat.
Sandals or open toed shoes – Wearing these will allow air movement and help keep feet dry. They also expose your feet to light, which fungus cannot tolerate. Socks with moisture wicking material also help as well.

Walking Indoors Can Strengthen Toes

When babies are born, their feet are generally soft. Proper foot development is essential in developing gross motor skills, such as walking, standing, running, and jumping. The bones typically strengthen under stress, and this is crucial for performing these motor skills. Each foot is made up of 26 bones, which amount to one quarter of the bones in the body. They will continue to develop and strengthen until approximately 18 years of age. Research has shown the feet will grow to half of their adult size in their first year of life, and the flat feet that most babies are born with will gradually develop into a full arch in their teenage years. The toes will develop strength when the toddler can walk barefoot while indoors as often as possible. When it is time to purchase the first pair of shoes for walking outside, it is beneficial that the shoe is made of flexible materials and has a sturdy sole. If you would like additional information about how your child’s feet will develop, please schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Tips for Keeping Children's Feet Healthy
- Make sure their shoes fit properly
- Look for any signs of in-toeing or out-toeing
- Check to see if they have Clubfoot (condition that affects your child’s foot and ankle, twisting the heel and toes inward) which is one of the most common nonmajor birth defects.
- Lightly cover your baby’s feet (Tight covers may keep your baby from moving their feet freely, and could prevent normal development)
- Allow your toddler to go shoeless (Shoes can be restricting for a young child’s foot)
- Cut toenails straight across to avoid ingrown toenails
- Keep your child’s foot clean and dry
- Cover cuts and scrapes. Wash any scratches with soap and water and cover them with a bandage until they’ve healed.

Steps You Can Take to Prevent Athlete’s Foot

Your feet are a critical component of your overall physical health, and keeping them healthy requires taking deliberate steps to prevent common foot afflictions. One such affliction that can pose a significant threat to the health of your feet is athlete’s foot. This fungal infection usually affects the skin in between the toes and on the bottoms of the feet, resulting in flaking and itching sensations. This troublesome condition is typically acquired when someone walks barefoot on wet surfaces used by other people in locker rooms, gyms, and public pools. There are a number of steps you can take to decrease your chances of developing athlete’s foot. First and foremost, you can consider wearing flip-flops or shower shoes whenever using public showers or walking on moist, public surfaces. Additionally, since athlete’s foot thrives in wet environments, you might change your socks and alternate shoes everyday to ensure that your socks and shoes are completely dry and free of any harmful bacteria. Lastly, you could consider washing your feet everyday with soap and drying them completely with a towel to keep them clean and dry. Making an appointment with a podiatrist might help you learn of other ways to prevent athlete’s foot.

Causes of Numbness in the Feet

Sometimes your foot “goes to sleep” as the result of sitting awkwardly or wearing tight shoes. This is a temporary condition and in most cases, it resolves itself easily. Other causes of numbness in the feet and toes can be problematic as well as dangerous to your health. It can often be traced to a nerve damage that causes the feet to stop receiving transmissions from the brain, also known as peripheral neuropathy. Another common cause is damage to the circulatory system. Blood vessels become constricted and cannot supply the proper amount of blood to the area, causing peripheral artery disease (PAD). Diabetes, systemic diseases, vitamin deficiency, and alcoholism also can contribute to this condition. Physical conditions, including a herniated disc and spinal stenosis, can lead to numbness in one or both feet. Deep vein thrombosis (blood clots), extreme cold, atherosclerosis (a thickening of arterial walls), and Raynaud’s disease may cause numbness in the lower extremities. Caution is the byword when numbness, tingling and burning sensations in the feet and toes occur or won’t subside. Please consult a podiatrist as soon as possible for a diagnosis and appropriate treatment measures.
Neuropathy
Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.
What Is Neuropathy?
Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.
Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:
- Numbness
- Sensation loss
- Prickling and tingling sensations
- Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
- Muscle weakness
Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.
Treatment
To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.
Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.
