The Difference Between Sprains and Strains

People frequently confuse the terms sprains and strains. In short, a sprain is the tearing or rupture of a ligament that holds a joint together. A strain is the tearing or overstretching of a muscle or tendon. Strains are usually the result of putting too much stress on a tight or weak muscle. This can happen if you engage in a burst of energy without properly warming up. A sprain, however, is caused by the sudden, often forceful, twisting of a joint that causes a ligament to stretch. The severity of a sprain depends on how far the ligament is stretched. In both cases, attention must be paid to complete recovery from the injury to avoid developing a chronic condition. Several symptoms are common to both strains and sprains. Included are pain, tenderness, and limitation of movement. Swelling and inflammation are also common. Finally, the injury might cause internal bleeding, which results in a bruise. If you have incurred an injury to the foot or ankle that exhibits any of these symptoms, please see a podiatrist as soon as possible for an examination and a diagnosis.

Why You Should Care About Falls Prevention for Seniors

Although some people might not know about the severity of falls among senior citizens, this is a serious issue that affects a large portion of elderly Americans. A staggering number of elderly citizens are hospitalized annually because of an injury from falling —approximately 3 million. With this in mind, the concern of falling has become a public health issue among this older population. It is critical to note that preventing falls is a chief way in which a senior can protect their health, and one way they might go about doing this is by strengthening their feet. When a seniors’ feet are weak, they can become more susceptible to suffering from a fall of some sort. By strengthening the muscles in the feet, a senior can help guard against falls that could be potentially damaging and even deadly. If you are a senior citizen, it is a good idea to contact a podiatrist today for more information.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Two Methods That Can Determine Shoe Size

Wearing shoes that fit correctly is crucial in maintaining overall comfort while completing daily activities. Many people will try on several pairs of shoes before finding a perfect fit. It is beneficial to properly measure your feet prior to buying shoes, and this can be done by two different methods. Most shoe stores have a Brannock device, and this is generally effective in determining the correct shoe size. If this is unavailable, the foot can be measured while standing on a piece of paper. When the shoes and socks have been removed and the foot is lying flat on the floor, the foot can be traced. The results of the measurement may be more accurate when the foot is traced by someone else. Research has shown it is beneficial to purchase shoes at the end of the day when the feet are at their largest. Additionally, wearing the socks that would be worn with the intended shoes may help to ensure a proper fit. If you have questions and would like more information about how to find out your shoe size, please confer with a podiatrist.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

What Is a High Ankle Sprain?

An ankle sprain is one of the most common sports injury nationwide. A lower ankle sprain is experienced by most people who endure this type of injury, and this is defined as damage that is done to the tendons and muscles below the ankle. Conversely, a high ankle sprain affects the ligaments that support the leg bones which connect to the ankle. This can happen as a result of the foot twisting outward and stretching beyond its normal range of motion. The common symptoms that can accompany a high ankle sprain can include pain while walking upstairs, as the foot flexes upward. The ankle may also feel weak, and this can make walking difficult. Performing a squeeze test is often successful in determining an existing high ankle sprain. This is done by squeezing the patient’s leg under the knee, and observing if there is pain that radiates to the ankle area. Relief can be found when the affected foot is elevated, and existing swelling may be reduced when the foot is wrapped in compression bandages. If you have this type of injury, it is strongly advised that you consult with a podiatrist who can effectively treat an ankle sprain.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

Morton’s Neuroma Is Treatable

Morton’s neuroma is the thickening of the tissue that surrounds the digital nerve leading to the ball of the foot between the 3rd and 4th toes. Wearing high heels, flip-flops, or any shoes that are ill-fitting can increase the pressure on the toes and ball of the foot and make the condition worse. Activities that over-pronate the foot, such as walking barefoot in sand, or high-impact activities, such as jogging, are likely to increase pain with Morton’s neuroma. Walking can exacerbate the discomfort of the ailment but if the foot is protected and relieved from pressure, it can be continued. Shoes that provide a heel that is higher than the toes can reduce suffering. Beyond changing footwear, decreasing activity, massage, stretching, and using metatarsal insoles can help with this condition. If left untreated, Morton’s neuroma can lead to nerve damage. If you are experiencing foot pain and think you might be suffering from this condition, see a podiatrist who can help with a proper diagnosis and treatment options.
