Are Flip-Flops Damaging to My Feet?

Looking ahead to the summer months, let’s talk flip-flops. Flip-flops tend to be an inexpensive, trendy, colorful, and easy-to-wear option for summer, but because there is little support they may be harmful to your feet. Possible injuries may include damage inflicted to the heel, typically causing severe pain. Additionally, the ligaments in the arch may be affected, which may result from improper support if continued over long periods of time. Spraining the ankle can be connected to lack of arch support, which may occur when rolled to one side. This can be alleviated when proper shoes are chosen for summer wear. There are several choices available for these “fun” shoes, including sandals with a supportive outer heel, cork soles in place of rubber soles, and solid straps that may help to hold the foot in place. Your feet will look good and, more importantly, feel good when the right shoes are chosen.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

Podiatric Help for Gout on the Rise

Gout, once known as a disease of indulgence, is becoming increasingly common as rates of obesity and high blood pressure climb. This painful condition occurs when uric acid builds up in the bloodstream, forming sharp crystals that settle in joints, most often the big toe. Sudden swelling, redness, and intense pain can make even a bed sheet feel unbearable. Excess weight and certain medications used for hypertension can raise uric acid levels, triggering more frequent attacks. A podiatrist can help identify gout through diagnostic testing, relieve pain during flare-ups, and create a personalized plan to prevent future episodes. This may include shoe recommendations, dietary guidance, and custom orthotics to ease pressure on sensitive joints. If you experience recurring pain in your toe or foot, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a podiatrist for evaluation and management.

Gout is a foot condition that requires certain treatment and care. If you are seeking treatment, contact Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a type of arthritis caused by a buildup of uric acid in the bloodstream. It often develops in the foot, especially the big toe area, although it can manifest in other parts of the body as well. Gout can make walking and standing very painful and is especially common in diabetics and the obese.

People typically get gout because of a poor diet. Genetic predisposition is also a factor. The children of parents who have had gout frequently have a chance of developing it themselves.

Gout can easily be identified by redness and inflammation of the big toe and the surrounding areas of the foot. Other symptoms include extreme fatigue, joint pain, and running high fevers. Sometimes corticosteroid drugs can be prescribed to treat gout, but the best way to combat this disease is to get more exercise and eat a better diet.

Get Professional Care for a Broken Foot or Ankle

Constant care and regular evaluation are important for a foot or ankle fracture. If left untreated, foot or ankle fractures can worsen over time and create more serious problems.

Don't wait to be examined if you believe you've experienced a foot or ankle fracture.

Treatment for Achilles Tendinopathy

Achilles tendinopathy develops when the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel becomes inflamed or weakened from overuse, tight calf muscles, or wearing improper footwear. Pain often begins as stiffness in the back of the ankle, especially after activity, and can progress to swelling or tenderness that limits movement. Treatment aims to reduce strain, restore flexibility, and promote healing. Resting from high-impact exercise and wearing supportive shoes with cushioned heels can help relieve discomfort. A podiatrist may suggest stretching and strengthening exercises or custom orthotics to improve tendon resilience. In more persistent cases, advanced treatments may be considered. If you have recurring heel or calf pain that worsens with activity, it is suggested that you schedule a visit with a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and personalized care.

Achilles tendon injuries need immediate attention to avoid future complications. If you have any concerns, contact Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM of Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is the Achilles Tendon?

The Achilles tendon is a tendon that connects the lower leg muscles and calf to the heel of the foot. It is the strongest tendon in the human body and is essential for making movement possible. Because this tendon is such an integral part of the body, any injuries to it can create immense difficulties and should immediately be presented to a doctor.

What Are the Symptoms of an Achilles Tendon Injury?

There are various types of injuries that can affect the Achilles tendon. The two most common injuries are Achilles tendinitis and ruptures of the tendon.

Achilles Tendinitis Symptoms

  • Inflammation
  • Dull to severe pain
  • Increased blood flow to the tendon
  • Thickening of the tendon

Rupture Symptoms

  • Extreme pain and swelling in the foot
  • Total immobility

Treatment and Prevention

Achilles tendon injuries are diagnosed by a thorough physical evaluation, which can include an MRI. Treatment involves rest, physical therapy, and in some cases, surgery. However, various preventative measures can be taken to avoid these injuries, such as:

  • Thorough stretching of the tendon before and after exercise
  • Strengthening exercises like calf raises, squats, leg curls, leg extensions, leg raises, lunges, and leg presses

Does My Child Have A Broken Toe?

If your child has stubbed their toe and you notice he or she is limping, it may be an indication of a broken toe. Some of the symptoms that are often associated with this condition may include severe pain, swelling, and the inability to put weight on the toe. After a proper diagnosis, which generally includes having an X-ray taken, proper treatment can begin. This can consist of taping the affected toe to the toe next to it, which is referred to as buddy taping. This method can give the fractured toe the stability that is needed as the healing process takes place. If the fracture is severe, it may be necessary to use a cane or crutches, which can help lessen the weight placed on the toe. If you think your child may have broken their toe, it is advised that you schedule a consultation with a podiatrist who can properly treat this condition.

Broken toes may cause a lot of pain and should be treated as soon as possible. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Anthony Ricciardi Jr., DPM from Foot & Ankle Specialists of Nevada. Our Doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is a Broken Toe?

A broken toe occurs when one or more of the toe bones of the foot are broken after an injury. Injuries such as stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on it may cause a toe fracture.

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Swelling
  • Pain (with/without wearing shoes)
  • Stiffness
  • Nail Injury

Although the injured toe should be monitored daily, it is especially important to have a podiatrist look at your toe if you have severe symptoms. Some of these symptoms include worsening or new pain that is not relieved with medication, sores, redness, or open wounds near the toe.
